Drama

The drama production Double Edge was the result of key projects undertaken prior, which were pivotal in the creation of the play.

These projects were the Motorpoint Arena Family Fun Day and The Gedling Outreach program.  These projects leading up to the drama production were massive in themselves and if we explain them briefly it demonstrates how Double Edge was shaped.

Surge In Knife Crime

Cut In Police Funding

Following the recent increase in knife crime & according to National statistics, Nottinghamshire has seen a 29% increase in crime with 20% specific surge in knife crime, producing the highest figures since 2011, coupled with a recent 25% cut to police funding, the lowest statistics in 30 years!

Something Was Needed!

Motorpoint Arena
Family Fun Day

In July 2018, The Pythian young leaders worked alongside the Pythian Club to put on a big family fun day event at the Motorpoint Arena, Nottingham.

The event was designed for all the young people within the community and it offered a mixture of boxing exhibitions, live music, poetry, dance group and community stalls.

It was here that the young leaders excelled and with relevant skills and training, took on key roles.

The roles included;

  • Event planning and management
  • Sound and lighting support
  • Hosting VIP guests including;
    • The Lord Mayor of Nottingham
    • PCC Paddy Tipping & Local councillors.

It was from this experience that the young leaders were able to add a variety of skills to their shopping basket for life, simultaneously building upon their self-esteem and becoming positive role models within their community.

Gedling Borough Council
Outreach Program

In August of 2018, in response to this unfortunate knife based crime rise and a recent serious knife incident in Arnold, Nottingham, The young leaders approached key stakeholders in community management and control with a view to providing  some outreach work;

  • Gedling Borough Council
  • Gedling Community Police

The community were concerned coupled with young people becoming disengaged from the community causing themselves to make wrong choices.

The Pythian young leaders then begun an extensive 2 nights 5 hours per night outreach service supported by senior staff.

The young leaders  went out and not only spoke directly to the members of the community i.e. young people, parents and the elderly but also did free football, boxing and Multi-skill sessions on the local park.

This opportunity provided members of the community with a direct way to give feedback and get into positive, healthy initiatives.

The Response Was Astronomical

900
Anti-Social Behaviour Incidents

During the 6 weeks of outreach there were ZERO issues of Antisocial behaviour that previously was a daily problem.  The young people that were seen as problems were transforming their lives and begun getting fully involved with the Pythian program.

After carrying out the Gedling outreach program and gaining feedback, they noticed a reoccurring theme;

“KNIFE CRIME HAS A GENUINE LACK OF AWARENESS!”

The young leaders have grown up in some of Nottingham’s most dangerous areas and have witnessed the rise, as well as effect of, knife crime first hand.

The young leaders came together in a bid to do more about the increase in knife crime, it was the combination of the Gedling outreach project and the Motorpoint arena that lead the young people to come up with the Double Edge model and have the confidence to ‘bring it to life’.

“Although protests, debates, rallies, government campaigns, speeches by the police, teachers and victims have proven to deliver some form of effectiveness, knife crime continues to be a persistent road block that heavily affects our youth within our communities. We know that knife crime can never fully be eradicated however it can be brought down”.

Double Edge would be a perfect way to do this.....

Double Edge creates awareness, education and personal responsibilities within our young generation, through a drama performance that is hard hitting and real life.

The production was Directed by an experienced practitioner but the screenplay, scenes and design were planned by the Pythian young Leaders with hours of writing and rehearsals.

The personal experiences and stories they heard from Gedling and other projects/feedback shaped the production and made it believable.

The proof however is in the pudding and they aired it he performance initially PCC Paddy Tipping and Nottinghamshire Police ACC Kate Meynell who both publicly endorsed the performance.

It was then screened to 25 National Citizen Service students ( aged 16-17) and the feedback was alarming and exactly why this drama is needed.

NONE of them knew about ‘Joint Enterprise’.

The drama was premiered at Bonnington Theatre, Arnold to invited guests ranging from local MPS, councillors, County and City officials ( including Heads of Education), Police and other guests.

It was an amazing success with great feedback that is simply justification that this drama is vital in supporting the decrease of violence. It creates awareness and with the supported workshops that are delivered by experienced practitioners provides an effective approach.

One amazing story is that the young man that was stabbed in Arnold and his mother now work alongside The Pythian Club and have been inspirational to us all.

This is what the audience thinks.....
