The road to Wembley – & a historic moment in Women’s Football!

Promoting equality, diversity, inclusion and belonging is the driving force behind The Pythian Club’s most recent initiative, ‘Open Up The Badge’, which focusses on supporting women, and other under-represented groups, and widening participation in sport. So when Street Games generously offered some tickets to the sold-out Vitality FA Women’s Cup Final, it was welcomed by The Club with arms wide open.

Against this backdrop, Sunday 14 May, saw a group of 9 women and The Pythian Club’s Development Manager, George Lindsey, travel to Wembley to watch the final. The sing-along on the journey down saw the group bonding and the start of a day filled with fun and laughter. The pre-game (and half time) DJ sets, delivered by 2 female BBC Radio 1 DJs, saw the group (and the Stadium crowds) enjoying a festival atmosphere, adding some dance moves to their singing prowess.

It was just thrilling to see the faces of the group light up as we entered the impressive Wembley stadium as they began to soak up the electric atmosphere. Some of those joining us had never been to a professional football match let alone a women’s final. What a cracking day it was full of lasting memories.“

Congratulations to Chelsea who secured a 1-0 victory over Manchester United to take this year’s crown.
