Delivering experiences for students to thrive

This week saw the culmination of our delivery of the NCS (National Citizen Service) programme to students at Vision West Nottinghamshire College (WNC), Mansfield, with over 120, 16 – 17-year-old students engaged in new experiences, learning new skills and taking their confidence to new levels.

As the charitable arm of the English Football League, EFL in the Community, engaged The Pythian Club as a Delivery Partner on the NCS programme, which they have now been involved in for over 10 years.

Starting in September 2024, The Pythian Club initially delivered the NCS programme to students on both ‘Sports Coaching’ and ‘Uniformed Protection Services’ courses at WNC . This then expanded to three additional cohorts, including students in the Aviation course.

As part of their experiences, The Pythian Club:

  • Delivered the Active Leaders CIMSPA-endorsed course which covered CPR and first aid awareness, basic safeguarding and risk management, preparation, planning, communication, marketing, budgeting, hands-on delivery and CV development.

  • Provided a bushcraft skills experience delivered by Urban Bushcraft allowing students to immerse themselves in nature honing essential survival skills and learning strategies to thrive in a woodland setting, including cooking with natural resources sourced directly from the forest.

  • Hosted a ‘Leadership Compass’ session which provided thought-provoking discussions and practical exercises enabling these future leaders to discover how to identify their unique strengths, navigate challenges, and approach situations confidently and optimistically.

  • Organised delivery of a dynamic and uplifting rowing session delivered by British Rowing where students, many of whom had never rowed, enjoyed actively trying out rowing in the warmth of their sports hall. Witnessing their enthusiasm, determination, and willingness to step out of their comfort zones was truly inspiring.

Sommo Pratim Chakraborty, Sports Inclusion Officer at The Pythian Club said: “It has been an honour to have led and delivered a transformative leadership programme, with the support of our wider team, to the student cohorts at WNC. These inspiring students have developed crucial skills in leadership, team building, confidence, and social employability as a commitment to their personal growth. We extend our thanks to WNC and EFL in the Community for providing us with an opportunity to support these students.”
