A Summer of sport

From competitions, holiday programmes, outdoor activities and complimentary tickets to events, this Summer was jampacked with some incredible sporting opportunities (basketball, boxing, cricket, hockey, football and watersports) for the young people that we support through the Club.

Thanks to the generous support of Street Games and Subway,  4 young people, accompanied by TPC’s Ashley Gorman and Devante Wilson, attended the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games to see Boxing in action and attend a 3-day Street Games camp involving outdoor team building activities.

Ian Dipolo, from Nottinghamshire Cricket Board, delivered a fun and engaging Street Cricket skills session to TPC sports coaches adding another sport for the Club to deliver to the community. In addition, Ian provided 10 tickets to ‘The Hundred’ cricket tournament for 8 local young people and 2 parents to enjoy watching the Trent Rockets and the added bonus of meeting some of the team.

Together with other providers, TPC supported Nottingham Football Community Trust to deliver multi-sports during their 4 week Nottingham ‘Holiday Activity and Food’ (HAF) programme to hundreds of young people across 11 sites.

The August Bank Holiday saw a group of c30 young people, thanks in part to the funding support of Serco UK, take part in a day of adrenaline-fuelled outdoor fun (Sky Trail, Kayaking & Paddleboarding and Lagoon Wipeout) at National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont Country Park.

The same bank holiday also saw 3 TPC teams entered into a police-endorsed Basketball tournament hosted by Nottinghamshire Police, where TPC came 2nd overall, what a result!

With the support from Andrew Conroy, Head of Tramlink Nottingham, and Simon Mason Mercian Hockey, Hockey was firmly added to the Summer  sports’ agenda. TPC staff and young leaders enjoyed a hockey session where Simon, a former Olympian and English field Hockey goalkeeper, taught them to how to deliver Hockey. TPC are incredibly grateful for the kit gifted to us to deliver hockey as part of our multi-sports programme.  In addition we were treated to watching Women’s Netherlands vs Germany match as part of The NET Masters Hockey World Cup 2022 held in Nottingham.

And last but not least TPC’s Ben Rosser and George Lindsey took around 20 young people to visit the beautiful grounds of St Georges Park, home of England football. Together with TPC partners Street Games, Active Notts and Upshot, we met with senior personnel within the F.A. to discuss the lack of equality, diversity and inclusivity within football coaching. Following the discussion, we were treated to a delicious and nutritious lunch after which the young people were coached and inspired by the wise words of Michael Johnson, England’s U18 coach, former footballer and club ambassador for Derby County.

A huge thanks to all funders and everyone involved who made this an incredibly special summer of sport.
